Functional Medicine Consultation in New Cairo
A structured medical review that looks at the whole child — history, growth, nutrition, sleep, digestion, energy and daily routine — alongside conventional paediatric care, so the plan addresses what is actually driving the picture rather than one symptom at a time.
- Licensed medical entity in New Cairo
- Consultant-led, not technician-led
- Open daily, 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Where this consultation sits at Spectra
Families reach us through one of two entry consultations. Both lead into the same multidisciplinary team — the difference is which question you are starting with.
Functional & Bio-Medical Consultation
Start here when the question is medical: recurring physical symptoms, feeding and gut complaints, poor sleep, low energy, growth concerns, unexplained regression, or a child already in therapy whose progress has stalled without a clear reason.
Developmental & Behavioural Consultation
Start there when the question is developmental: speech delay, autism or ADHD concerns, behaviour, learning or school readiness. Led by Dr. Ahmed Ramzy, Consultant Developmental-Behavioural Paediatrician.
Many families end up using both. If you book the wrong one we will tell you at triage and move you — it is a single medical record either way. Not sure which fits? Send us what you are noticing and the care team will point you to the right first appointment.
What the consultation actually covers
The visit is a clinical review, not a questionnaire. These are the areas a Spectra consultant works through — in whatever depth your child’s presentation calls for.
Full medical and birth history
Pregnancy and delivery, early milestones, illnesses, hospital admissions, medicines and supplements taken now and in the past.
Previous investigations reviewed
Laboratory results, imaging and reports you already have are read properly before anything new is considered. Repeat testing is avoided where existing results still answer the question.
Feeding, diet and digestion
What the child actually eats and refuses, appetite, texture selectivity, bowel pattern, reflux and abdominal symptoms — the areas most often linked to energy and behaviour.
Sleep, activity and routine
Sleep onset and waking, screen and movement patterns, school day structure and the daily load on the family, all of which change how a child presents in clinic.
Clinical examination and growth
Physical examination where appropriate, growth parameters plotted against previous records, and any red flags that need urgent referral rather than a programme.
A written, prioritised plan
What is being addressed first and why, what will be monitored, which investigations are genuinely indicated, and when you will be reviewed again.
How the first visit runs
No surprises. This is the sequence from the moment you contact the clinic to the point where you have a plan you can act on.
Booking & triage
Tell us your main concern. The care team confirms this is the right entry consultation and books the appropriate clinician. WhatsApp enquiries are answered within about 15 minutes during clinic hours.
Bring your file
Previous reports, laboratory and imaging results, a written list of current medicines and supplements with doses, growth records, and a short note of what you see at home and at school.
The consultation
History, records, nutrition, sleep and examination are worked through with you in the room. Priorities are agreed out loud, and anything urgent is separated from anything that can wait.
Plan & follow-up
You leave with next steps, safety advice, any indicated investigations explained beforehand, and a review date. Where a longer programme fits, follow-up is scheduled so progress is measured rather than assumed.
What usually brings families here
Most parents book this consultation because something does not add up — a child who is being treated for one thing while several other things quietly persist, or a therapy programme that started well and then flattened out. These are the presentations we see most often alongside the developmental picture.
When this is not the right first step
This is not emergency care. Acute illness, breathing difficulty, seizures, severe dehydration, injury or any rapid deterioration needs urgent medical attention — call 123 or go to the nearest emergency department. A functional medicine consultation also does not replace treatment your child is already receiving from a specialist; it is designed to sit alongside it.

Medical findings are handed over to the therapy departments, so an eating, sleep or gut issue picked up in consultation reaches the team running the child’s daily sessions.
Tests and complementary technologies
Laboratory work is requested only when the treating clinician judges it will change the plan. Alongside standard investigations, the clinic holds several complementary technologies that may be used as part of a supervised programme.
- Functional blood panels
- Physiospect
- Qest-4
- Equilios
- Tesla support
- Trikombin
- Photobiomodulation (PBM)
- OligoScan / SoCheck
- HRV testing
How we talk about these — and what we will not claim
Complementary technologies at Spectra support a clinical plan. They are not diagnostic tools, they do not replace validated investigations or standard medical treatment, and no reading from them is presented to a family as a diagnosis.
Exosome-based interventions remain investigational for many indications and require careful medical, ethical and regulatory review; availability is not guaranteed. If you are researching them, read our information page for families before making any decision.
No device, test or programme at this clinic is offered with a promised outcome. If anyone describes a guaranteed result to you, that is not our position — please tell the clinic management.
The clinicians who run this consultation
Functional and bio-medical consultations at Spectra Egypt are led by qualified paediatricians. You will know before you arrive which of them you are seeing.
Dr. Mohamed Afify Ali
Consultant Paediatrician & Functional Neurologist
Leads the functional and bio-medical track. More than 20 years of paediatric practice across Egypt, the UAE and Europe, and he sees families at Spectra in both Cairo and Dubai. Paediatric neurology, autism and ADHD, and complex files where several concerns have accumulated without one coordinated plan.
Dr. Ehab El Emam
Consultant Paediatrician & Neonatologist · Functional Medicine
A trained neonatologist working with a functional medicine perspective, with over a decade of practice and international medical affiliations. He also sees families at Spectra Dubai. Newborn and early-years care, food allergy and coeliac disease, and the dietary side of developmental presentations.
Dr. Mai Mohamed Ghazy
Paediatric Consultant · Feeding & Swallowing
Sees bio-medical consultations and leads the feeding and swallowing side — the usual referral when eating difficulty is the dominant concern.
Questions families ask
Is this consultation for children or adults?
It is built primarily around children and adolescents, which is the majority of who we see. We also take parents and adults who want the same structured whole-person review, so the clinic is not restricted by age.
How is it different from a normal paediatric visit?
A standard visit usually addresses the presenting complaint. This one takes a wider view — full history, previous investigations, nutrition, sleep, digestion and routine — and then coordinates the findings into one plan with the rest of the team where relevant.
How long does the appointment take?
Plan for a longer visit than a routine clinic appointment, and bring your paperwork with you. The exact duration depends on how much history there is to work through; reception will confirm the booked slot when you schedule.
What should we bring to the first appointment?
Previous medical reports, any laboratory or imaging results, a written list of current medicines and supplements with doses, growth records if you have them, and a short note of what you are noticing at home and at school.
Will tests be requested at the first visit?
Only if the treating clinician considers them medically appropriate. Tests are explained before they are requested — what is being looked for, and what would change depending on the result.
Does this replace our current doctor or therapist?
No. It is designed to work alongside existing care. Where appropriate we coordinate with your child’s current physicians and therapists rather than duplicating or contradicting them.
Do you use devices or scans as diagnostic tools?
No. Complementary technologies support a plan; they do not replace validated diagnostic methods or standard medical treatment, and no result from them is presented as a diagnosis.
My child is already in therapy here. Do we still need this?
Not automatically. It becomes useful when progress has stalled, when physical symptoms keep interrupting sessions, or when feeding and sleep are undermining the programme. Ask your therapy lead — they will say if a medical review is the sensible next step.
Can we do it remotely if we are outside Cairo?
Yes for the consultation itself, through our online consultation. Physical examination and any in-clinic technology obviously require a visit, so some plans will still need one appointment in New Cairo.
What happens after the consultation?
You receive clear next steps, safety advice and a follow-up schedule based on clinical need. Where a longer programme is appropriate, follow-up is planned so progress can actually be reviewed rather than assumed.
What usually comes next
Depending on what the consultation finds, these are the paths families most often move onto.

Turning findings into an eating plan the family can actually sustain at home.
Specialised assessment
The developmental and behavioural side of the dual-track assessment.
Feeding therapy
