A Bright Child Who Is Struggling at School Deserves an Explanation
When effort and results do not match, the reason is rarely laziness. A structured psychometric and learning assessment identifies where the breakdown actually is — and what teaching approach will work.
Book a Learning AssessmentAsk on WhatsAppThree Areas We Assess Separately
A child can be strong in one area and struggling in another. Testing them separately is what prevents the wrong label — and the wrong support.
Reading
- Slow, effortful or inaccurate decoding
- Guessing words from the first letter
- Reading the words but not retaining meaning
- Avoiding reading aloud
Writing & spelling
- Spelling the same word differently on one page
- Ideas that are far richer spoken than written
- Effortful, tiring handwriting
- Very short written output
Mathematics
- Difficulty holding number facts in memory
- Losing track mid-way through steps
- Confusion with place value or sequences
- Anxiety specifically around maths
Rule Out the Simple Explanations First
Several very different things look identical in a classroom. This is why we assess rather than assume.
Attention, not ability
A child who cannot sustain attention will underperform in every subject without having a learning disorder.
Vision or hearing
Uncorrected vision or intermittent hearing loss produces exactly the pattern of a struggling reader.
Language foundations
Weak underlying language makes reading comprehension and written expression harder even when decoding is fine.
Anxiety and confidence
A child who expects to fail stops trying. That is a mental-health need, not a learning disorder.
Teaching mismatch
Missed foundational instruction, school changes or language of instruction can create gaps that look like disability.
A specific learning difficulty
A genuine, persistent difficulty in one domain despite adequate teaching and effort — identified by testing, not by guesswork.
What Actually Happens
Assessment is carried out by our psychometry team and is usually spread across sessions so your child is not tested to exhaustion in one sitting.
Background and school information
Developmental and educational history, school reports, and where possible input from the current teacher.
Cognitive profile
Standardised measures of reasoning, working memory and processing — establishing what your child is capable of.
Academic attainment
Reading accuracy and comprehension, spelling, written expression and numeracy measured against age expectations.
Attention and executive function
Where relevant, measures of attention, planning and organisation, since these change what support is needed.
Report and school recommendations
A written report in plain language, with specific classroom accommodations and a teaching plan you can hand to the school.
Teaching That Matches the Profile
Support is structured, explicit and reviewed. It is not extra homework or general tutoring.
Academic & Learning Support
Structured, multi-sensory teaching in the specific area of difficulty, at the child’s actual level.
Psychometry & Assessment
Formal cognitive and attainment testing, and re-testing to measure change over time.
Executive Function
Planning, organisation, task initiation and working-memory strategies that make independent study possible.
Child Psychology
Rebuilding confidence and managing the anxiety that years of struggling tends to create.
Speech & Language
Where underlying language weaknesses affect comprehension and written expression.
Occupational Therapy
Where handwriting, visual-motor skills or sitting tolerance are part of the difficulty.
What Support Changes — and What It Doesn’t
A specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia is a lifelong difference in how the brain processes certain information. It is not an illness and it is not something we claim to remove.
What good support achieves
✓ Real gains in reading, writing or maths skill.
✓ Strategies the child can use independently.
✓ Accommodations that let them show what they know.
✓ Confidence rebuilt after years of frustration.
✓ A school that finally understands the profile.
What we will not claim
✗ That dyslexia can be cured or trained away.
✗ That a device, supplement or scan fixes learning.
✗ A guaranteed grade or reading level by a set date.
✗ Success rates we cannot evidence.
✗ That assessment alone changes anything without teaching.
Straight Answers
At what age can a learning difficulty be assessed?
Formal reading and writing assessment is usually most reliable from around age 6–7, once a child has had consistent teaching. Before that we can assess pre-literacy and language foundations, which often predict later difficulty.
Is dyslexia curable?
No, and we will not tell you it is. Dyslexia is a lifelong difference in how the brain processes written language. What changes with good structured teaching is skill, strategy and confidence — many people with dyslexia read well as adults and succeed academically.
My child reads fine but writes very little. Is that still a learning difficulty?
It can be. Written expression, spelling and handwriting can be affected independently of reading. That is exactly why we assess each area separately rather than testing reading alone.
Will the report help with school?
That is one of its main purposes. The report includes specific classroom accommodations and teaching recommendations written for teachers, and with your consent we can discuss them with the school directly.
Could this just be attention rather than learning?
Yes, and the two often occur together. Our assessment includes attention and executive function measures precisely so we can tell whether the difficulty is in learning, in attention, or both.
How long does the assessment take?
It is usually spread across more than one session so your child is not fatigued. The number of sessions depends on how many areas need testing.
Does a diagnosis label my child permanently?
A formal identification is a tool for getting the right teaching and accommodations, not a judgement about intelligence or potential. Many children feel relieved to finally have an explanation.
