Understanding Your Child’s Attention and Focus
Difficulty with attention, activity level or impulse control can have several different explanations. At Spectra Cure Clinics Egypt we assess carefully before we recommend anything — then coordinate the professionals your child actually needs.
What the first appointment covers
The Concerns That Usually Bring Families In
These patterns are common and can have more than one cause. Noticing them is a reason to assess — not a diagnosis on its own.
Attention and follow-through
Loses track of instructions, starts tasks without finishing them, or seems not to listen even when spoken to directly.
Activity level and impulse
Constant movement, difficulty staying seated, interrupting, or acting before thinking about the consequence.
School and homework
Work is below what the child seems capable of, homework takes far longer than expected, or reports mention focus and organisation.
Planning and organisation
Difficulty starting, sequencing and finishing multi-step tasks; forgetting materials; struggling to manage time.
Frustration and mood
Big reactions to small setbacks, difficulty waiting, low confidence, or friction at home around routines.
Friendships and social play
Difficulty taking turns, reading social cues, or sustaining play — sometimes mistaken for behaviour alone.
Assessment Before Any Recommendation
Attention difficulties can reflect ADHD, but they can also reflect sleep, hearing, language, learning, anxiety, or a mismatch between the child and the school setting. Our job is to tell those apart before anyone starts a programme.
Track 1 — Developmental & Behavioural
Led by Dr. Ahmed Ramzy, Consultant Developmental-Behavioural Pediatrician. Structured developmental history, standardised parent and teacher rating scales, cognitive and executive-function measures where indicated, and direct observation.
Track 2 — Functional Medicine
Where the history suggests it, our functional medicine team reviews general health, sleep, nutrition and relevant laboratory findings that can affect concentration and regulation. This runs alongside — never instead of — the developmental assessment.
Standardised Measures, Chosen Per Child
Not every child needs every measure. The clinician selects from validated instruments based on age, presentation and the questions the family wants answered.
Behaviour rating scales
Parent and teacher questionnaires used to compare behaviour against age expectations across settings.
Cognitive assessment
Where learning is a question, cognitive and reasoning measures help separate attention from ability.
Executive function
Measures of planning, working memory, inhibition and organisation — often the day-to-day difficulty families describe.
Learning and academic profile
Reading, writing and maths screening when school performance is part of the concern.
The Departments That May Be Involved
A plan is built from the services that fit the findings — not from a fixed package. These are the Spectra Egypt departments most often involved when attention and regulation are the concern.
Executive Function
Targeted work on planning, starting tasks, working memory, time awareness and self-monitoring, with strategies that transfer to home and school.
Academic & Learning Support
Structured teaching support where reading, writing or maths have fallen behind the child’s potential.
Behavioural Programmes
Individual behaviour goals around routines, transitions, task completion and self-regulation.
Child Psychology
Support for frustration tolerance, anxiety, confidence and emotional regulation where these accompany attention difficulties.
Occupational & Sensory Support
Where sensory regulation, coordination or handwriting affect participation and sitting tolerance.
Parent Guidance & Training
Practical, coached strategies for parents — routines, instructions, and responses that reduce daily conflict.
What We Do — And What We Don’t Claim
Attention difficulties are managed, supported and often significantly improved. They are not something we promise to cure, and we will not tell you otherwise to win a booking.
What you can expect
✓ A clear explanation of the assessment findings in plain language.
✓ Only the services that match the findings, with the reason for each.
✓ Written goals and scheduled review points.
✓ Guidance you can actually use at home and share with the school.
What we will not do
✗ Promise a cure, a permanent fix, or a guaranteed timeline.
✗ Quote recovery percentages or success rates we cannot evidence.
✗ Recommend a long programme before the assessment justifies it.
✗ Replace medical advice you receive from your treating physician.
Needs That Often Appear Alongside
Attention rarely sits on its own. Identifying what else is present is what stops a child being treated for the wrong thing.
Learning difficulties
Reading, writing or maths difficulty that can look like inattention in class.
Anxiety & regulation
Worry and low frustration tolerance that reduce available attention.
Sensory processing
Sensory needs affecting stillness, tolerance and participation.
Speech & language
Understanding or expression difficulty that affects following instructions.
Autism spectrum
Social communication and rigidity that can co-occur and need dual assessment.
Social communication
Turn-taking and peer interaction difficulty beyond attention alone.
Behavioural & emotional
Oppositional patterns and daily conflict around demands.
Developmental delay
Broader developmental profile that changes what support is appropriate.
What Parents Ask Us First
Straight answers about assessment, next steps and booking.
At what age can ADHD be assessed?
We assess attention and regulation concerns from around age 4 upwards, and we see children from age 2 for broader developmental questions. Below school age the focus is usually on development, play and regulation rather than a formal attention label. Teens and young adults are also seen.
Do I need a referral or a diagnosis before booking?
No. Families can book a developmental assessment directly. If your child already has a report from another clinic or school, bring it — it saves repeating work and helps us start from what is already known.
Does an assessment mean my child will be given medication?
No. Assessment and medication are separate decisions. Our role is to clarify the profile and coordinate developmental, behavioural, educational and family support. Any medical prescribing decision rests with the treating physician and is discussed with you.
How long does the assessment take?
The first developmental appointment is usually around one hour. If further standardised measures are indicated, they are scheduled as separate sessions so the child is not overloaded in one visit.
Will you talk to my child’s school?
With your consent, yes. Teacher input is one of the most useful parts of an attention assessment, and written guidance for school is part of what we provide.
What happens after the assessment?
You receive an explanation of the findings, written goals, and a recommendation of which services are relevant now. Progress is reviewed at scheduled points and the plan is adjusted as your child changes.
Where is the clinic and when is it open?
Spectra Cure Clinics Egypt is on the 2nd floor, Building B, Saga Boulevard Complex, Mohamed Naguib Axis, New Cairo. We are open every day from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
